This paper breaks down the Hemingway books imagery and illustrations as they identify with a fisherman?s difficulties in beating afflictions in one?s own life. Huge numbers of the items, individuals, and spots referenced in The Old Man and the Sea contain another importance. Santiagos sail, for example, was fixed with flour sacks and, folded, it resembled the banner of lasting thrashing? (p.9). Huge numbers of the other anglers viewed Santiago and his sail as a token of disappointment. Santiago was wrinkled and has worked nearly to the point of destroying, similar to the old sail. He didn't get a fish in eighty-five days, too, which appeared as though he is vanquished and his angling days are finished. Be that as it may, the sail worked in spite of its appearance, maybe comparatively to Santiago himself. Neither the man nor the sail surrendered or gave any indication of yielding, paying little heed to their drained state. Santiago is patient, and trusts that the fish will come get drained, and come up all alone. Santiago understands this may keep going quite a while, so he put the line over his shoulders for a superior hold. This was not an agreeable situation for Santiago, however he metal with It. Santiago Is In physical torment, he goes through three days in an awkward position, and his hands get cuts all over them. HIS left hand gets a spasm which appears to decline to leave. The quality of the fish would make the elderly person fall In difficult and uncomfortable positions: He had been pulled down close on to the bow and his face was in the cut of dolphin and he was unable to move. This physical battle depleted Santiago, and the climate close by with the way that Santiago hadnt come arranged were not making a difference. He was truly depleted out, yet in addition morally.Santiago battle isn't just physical, yet moral as well. It could be seen as an individual Journey, as an inward battle. From the manner in which the creator depicts Santiago, we can reason that he is a certain, decided and solid elderly person. As we get further into the story, we understand this is valid, however that Santiago holds in any case a specific shortcoming to him, and that he needs to battle with himself to remain solid. The accompanying statement is a genuine case of this: I am bad for some more turns. Indeed you are, he let himself know. You are acceptable until the end of time. The more vulnerable side of Santiago needs to surrender; he doesnt have confidence In himself, however then the more grounded, increasingly decided Santiago steps in to prop him up. Another case of an internal battle is towards he end of the novel, when Santiago wraps up the sharks. He realizes they have beaten him, yet he says: And what beat you, he thought. Nothing, he said so anyone might hear. l went excessively far. Santiago continually repudiates himself, making his little battles. During this Journey, Santiago encounters distinctive chances, and various conditions of mind.He is brought higher than ever and he is mentally tested, and despite the fact that he is grieved, and in torment, we can see his delicate side, through his affection for nature. Through the excursion, we see Santiago closeness to nature. It permits us to perceive the amount he truly adores the animals, and the amount he regards them. We see this all the more accurately through the manner in which he calls the fish his Brother and companion. He even says: Fish, I love you and regard you definitely. Besides, his tenderness comes out when he converses with the shopping center fledgling: How old are you?Is this your first outing? he needs it to be sheltered, and Santiago love just as regard for nature from the manner in which he discusses other component in nature, for example, the ocean, or the breeze: He generally thought of her as la damage which is the thing that individuals call her in Spanish when they love her. He looks at it to a lady, and depicts it utilizing modifiers, for example, kind and delightful. Later on in the novel, he discusses the breeze, saying: The breeze is our companion. As before referenced, Santiago adores and regards nature. His closeness to nature is one that numerous couple of us have. He utilizes it for the delight, yet for endurance. He depends on it to help him in all that he does. In synopsis, the Journey is significant in this novel as it is because of it that we see Santiago advance as a character. We see him in each state: sure, delicate, solid, powerless, decided and vanquished. In actuality, this Journey permits the plot to be all the more energizing to the character, simultaneously demonstrating the significance of nature to Santiago, yet additionally to the novel itself. marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-11488781982131623652020-08-22T22:07:00.001-07:002020-08-22T22:07:24.358-07:00St. Valentines Day MassacreSt. Valentines Day Massacre Around 10:30 a.m. on St. Valentines Day, February 14, 1929, seven individuals from Bugs Morans posse were gunned down without a second thought in a carport in Chicago. The slaughter, arranged by Al Capone, stunned the country by its ruthlessness. The St. Valentines Day Massacre remains the most infamous criminal killing of the Prohibition time. The slaughter made Al Capone a national big name, however it additionally presented to Capone, the undesirable consideration of the central government. The Dead Straight to the point Gusenberg, Pete Gusenberg, John May, Albert Weinshank, James Clark, Adam Heyer, and Dr. Reinhart Schwimmer Opponent Gangs: Capone versus Moran During the Prohibition period, criminals administered a considerable lot of the enormous urban areas, getting rich from possessing speakeasies, bottling works, houses of ill-repute, and betting joints. These hoodlums would cut up a city between rival groups, pay off nearby authorities, and become neighborhood big names. By the late 1920s, Chicago was part between two adversary groups: one drove by Al Capone and the other by George Bugs Moran. Capone and Moran competed for influence, notoriety, and cash; besides, both went after for a considerable length of time to kill one another. In mid 1929, Al Capone was living in Miami with his family (to get away from Chicagos merciless winter) when his partner Jack Machine Gun McGurn visited him. McGurn, who had as of late endure a death endeavor requested by Moran, needed to talk about the progressing issue of Morans pack. While trying to dispense with the Moran pack completely, Capone consented to subsidize a death endeavor, and McGurn was set accountable for sorting out it. The Plan McGurn arranged cautiously. He found the Moran packs central command, which was in an enormous carport behind the workplaces of S.M.C. Cartage Company at 2122 North Clark Street. He chose shooters from outside the Chicago region, to guarantee that if there were any survivors, they would not have the option to perceive the executioners as a component of Capones group. McGurn recruited posts and set them up in a condo close to the carport. Additionally fundamental to the arrangement, McGurn obtained a taken squad car and two police outfits. Setting Up Moran With the arrangement composed and the executioners recruited, the time had come to set the snare. McGurn educated a nearby alcohol thief to contact Moran on February 13. The robber was to disclose to Moran that he had acquired a shipment of Old Log Cabin bourbon (for example generally excellent alcohol) that he was happy to sell at the entirely sensible cost of $57 per case. Moran immediately concurred and advised the thief to meet him at the carport at 10:30 the next morning. The Ruse Worked On the morning of February 14, 1929, the posts (Harry and Phil Keywell) were observing cautiously as the Moran pack amassed at the carport. Around 10:30 a.m., the posts perceived a man making a beeline for the carport as Bugs Moran. The posts told the shooters, who at that point moved into the taken squad car. At the point when the taken squad car arrived at the carport, the four shooters (Fred Killer Burke, John Scalise, Albert Anselmi, and Joseph Lolordo) leaped out. (A few reports state there were five shooters.) Two of the shooters were wearing police regalia. When the shooters hurried into the carport, the seven men inside observed the regalia and thought it was a normal police strike. Proceeding to accept the shooters to be cops, each of the seven men calmly did as they were told. They arranged, confronted the divider, and permitted the shooters to evacuate their weapons. Started shooting With Machine Guns The shooters at that point started shooting, utilizing two Tommy firearms, a sawed-off shotgun, and a .45. The murdering was quick and ridiculous. Every one of the seven casualties got in any event 15 shots, for the most part in the head and middle. The shooters at that point left the carport. As they left, neighbors who had heard the rodent tat-tat of the submachine weapon, peered out their windows and saw two (or three, contingent upon reports) cops strolling behind two men wearing non military personnel garments with their hands up. The neighbors expected that the police had arranged an attack and were capturing two men. After the slaughter had been found, many kept on accepting for half a month that the police were dependable. Moran Escaped Harm Six of the casualties kicked the bucket in the carport; Frank Gusenberg was taken to a clinic yet passed on three hours after the fact, declining to name who was capable. In spite of the fact that the arrangement had been deliberately created, one significant issue happened. The man that the posts had recognized as Moran was Albert Weinshank.â Bugs Moran, the primary objective for the death, was showing up two or three minutes late to the 10:30 a.m. meeting when he saw a squad car outside the carport. Thinking it was a police attack, Moran avoided the structure, unwittingly sparing his life. The Blonde Alibi The slaughter that took seven lives that St. Valentines Day in 1929 stood out as truly newsworthy the nation over. The nation was stunned at the mercilessness of the killings. Police attempted urgently to figure out who was dependable. Al Capone had a hermetically sealed justification since he had been brought in for a brief investigation by the Dade County specialist in Miami during the hour of the slaughter. Automatic weapon McGurn had what became called a blondie plausible excuse he had been at a lodging with his blonde sweetheart from 9 p.m. on February 13 through 3 p.m. on February 14.â Fred Burke (one of the shooters) was captured by police in March 1931 however was accused of the December 1929 homicide of a cop and condemned to life in jail for that wrongdoing. The Aftermath of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre This was one of the primary significant violations that the study of ballistics was utilized; in any case, nobody was ever attempted or indicted for the killings of the St. Valentines Day Massacre. In spite of the fact that the police never had enough proof to convict Al Capone, the general population realized he was dependable. Notwithstanding making Capone a national superstar, the St. Valentines Day Massacre carried Capone to the consideration of the national government. At last, Capone was captured for tax avoidance in 1931 and sent to Alcatraz. With Capone in prison, Machine Gun McGurn was left uncovered. On February 15, 1936, about seven years to the day of the St. Valentines Day Massacre, McGurn was gunned down at a bowling alley. Bugs Moran was very shaken from the whole occurrence. He remained in Chicago until the finish of Prohibition and afterward was captured in 1946 for some little league bank thefts. He passed on in jail from lung malignant growth. marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-83548114210946003182020-08-22T13:14:00.001-07:002020-08-22T13:14:11.681-07:00Huck Finn and Morality Essay Example For StudentsHuck Finn and Morality Essay All through the episode on pages 66-69 in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck battles with two unmistakable voices. One is agreeing with society, saying Huck should turn Jim in, and the other is seeing an inappropriate in handing his companion over, not seeing Jim as a slave. Twain needs the peruser to see the ethical issues Huck is experiencing, and what subjection belief system can do to a guiltless like Huck. Huck doesn't deliberately consider Jim s approaching opportunity until Jim himself begins to get amped up for the thought. The peruser sees Huck s first issue with Jim picking up his opportunity on page 66, when Huck says, Well, I can reveal to you it made me all over trembly and hot, as well, to hear him, since I started to get it through my head that he was generally free-and who was to be faulted for it? Why, me. I could get that out of my heart, no how nor no chance. Huck is hearing the voice of society now, not his own. He doesn't see an ethical quandary with Jim being free; he is against the way that he is the one helping him. This shows Huck misconception of subjugation. Huck doesn't treat Jim like a slave when they travel together, this shows the peruser that Huck sees Jim as an equivalent in many manners. Huck sees having a slave just as claiming the individual, not really being a captive to somebody. Along these lines, when he helps Jim runaway it would resemble taking. This inner voice is revealing to him that Miss Watson, Jim s ace, did nothing incorrectly to him and that he shouldn t be doing a wrong to her by aiding Jim escape. This is an entirely unexpected perspective on Miss Watson from Huck s point of view. Huck consistently hated Miss Watson, yet since this general public voice has an influence in Huck s judgment his perspectives are changed. This general public perspectives permits Huck to see Jim, a companion, just as a slave and Miss Watson, right around an enemy in his young perspectives, as a dear companion. Twain is demonstrating the peruser the gross shameful acts of subjection in this little occurrence, just as his ethical resistance to bondage. Twain needs the peruser to perceive how subjection belief system changed individuals, even the individuals who didn t comprehend it completely. Twain needs the peruser to perceive how unreasonable subjugation was by they way it could even change Huck s thinking, whom the peruser had at no other time seen voice sick originations about dark individuals. At the point when Huck s psyche can be so drastically changed to such contradicting thoughts and ethics, the peruser sees these detestations clearly and knows Twain s resistance to bondage is correct. Twain doesn't let the peruser thing severely of Huck for exceptionally long, however, having Huck s genuine voice sparkle out before the finish of the showdown. By page 67 Huck is nearly hating to proceed to turn Jim in, considering the to be as a commitment instead of an ethical right. He says, Well, I just felt wiped out. Be that as it may, I says, I got the chance to do it-I would t be able to receive in return. Twain needs the peruser to see Huck s change in judgment. The peruser can see Huck s newly discovered hesitance, welcomed on by Jim s expressions of appreciation. These words take Huck back to the acknowledgment that Jim is a companion, not property. What's more, despite the fact that Huck still intentionally says he should turn in Jim, the peruser doesn't accept he will do it any longer. Huck s showdown with the slave trackers and his plan to ensure Jim demonstrate the peruser right in his suspicion. Huck has now subliminally chose to ensure Jim no matter what. This is the second voice that Jim hears. This voice reveals to him that, s present you d a done right and surrender Jim; okay felt better than what you do now? Presently, says I, I d feel awful I d feel only a similar way I do now. All things considered, at that point, says I, what s the utilization you figuring out how to do right, when it s irksome to do right and ain t no difficulty to foul up, and the wages is only the equivalent? .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .postImageUrl , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .focused content territory { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:hover , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:visited , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:active { border:0!important; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: obscurity 250ms; webkit-change: murkiness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:active , .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:hover { mistiness: 1; progress: haziness 250ms; webkit-change: mistiness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .focused content region { width: 100%; position: relat ive; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content improvement: underline; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-outskirt span: 3px; content adjust: focus; content enrichment: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: supreme; right: 0; top: 0; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u69d3c729f7f9141b2bd2091401c05e0e:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Camouflage With The Rebels EssayEven however these are Huck s musings toward the finish of the episode, the peruser knows this was Huck s subliminal fight before he chose to help Jim. Twain needs the peruser to perceive that it is so difficult to break out of society s thoughts, however somebody must be eager to do it. Twain needs the peruser to regard Huck s incredible good transformation, regardless of whether it is taken cover behind Huck s lie to do whatever come handiest at the time on the grounds that the peruser realizes Huck will consistently pick Jim as handiest at this point. Twain is mentioning to the peruser to do what is handiest yet additionally to recall whom it influences, companion of adversary? Since, above even society s sees, should come companions. Twain s ethics are obviously appeared through this short, yet gigantically significant, entry. I think his ethics were strong for his time and I regard him in the most noteworthy venerate for his braveness at communicating them in a timeframe when blacks in the south were still particularly loathed. This reality in itself should spike others on to accomplish something contrary to what would be expected of society and voice their actual suppositions. In spite of the fact that this film highlights skilled entertainers like John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline effectively captures everyone's attention. Kline gives a splendid presentation as the pseudo-scholarly Otto. What makes Kline so astounding is the way that he moves and makes his character move over the screen. Directly from the beginning, in one of the filmâ⬠s first scene, we see that Klineâ⬠s Otto is no ordinary gem hoodlum. Despite the fact that Otto should be working under the appearance that he is Wandaâ⬠s (Jamie Lee Curtis) sister, he rapidly gives her bosom a crush in full perspective on Ken, one of different looters. What makes this development work humorously is that Kline does it so helping quick and that in the event that you squinted you may miss it. He has such authority over his arm that he can expand it, and pull back it in a matter of possibly a second. This takes into consideration the suspended doubt that Ken doesn't see him do it. Another development that Kline makes likewise says a lot about his body control. Otto and Wanda are as one in what I take to be Ottoâ⬠s quarters. They are talking enthusiastically about something and he jumps into the air, snatches a channel that is suspended from the roof, lifts himself totally off the ground and sails on to the bed with the beauty of a ballet performer. This is so fascinating on the grounds that Klineâ⬠s Otto should a be an obscene American burglar. He heads toward kick a vehicle severely. Or maybe then simply kicking the tire, or covering his foot into the vehicle entryway, Kline jumps into up and kicks the vehicle twice while he is noticeable all around. He takes what is only a basic development and makes into something substantially more. While Kevin Kline is definitely not a major man in height and he doesn't look truly scary, or particularly solid, he shows us the opposite. In one scene, he gets Wanda by the rear of her head and hurls her onto a bed like she was a cloth doll. In another scene, in an envious wrath, Otto breaks into the Cabin that Archie (John Cleese) and Wanda are in. He catches both of them ridiculing him. Otto hates to be called inept or offended. When Archi will not apologize and reclaim his abuse, Otto takes Archie, who is an a lot greater man, and dangles him by the feet out the window until he says he is grieved. While we don't perceive how Otto gets Archie into the situation of hanging out the window, we accept that he rapidly and unequivocally over controlled him. Towards the center of the film, we see Klineâ⬠s Otto before a mirror with a katana edge. Apparently he is rehearsing ninjitsu. This makes it conceivable for us a group of people to accept he has the feline like calm abilities to have the option to sneak into Archieâ⬠s house without being heard. Another model he shows of this sort of body control is when infuriated Wanda, he snatches a 8ãâ"10 photograph of her and punches through it without harming his hand. We additionally observe him rehearsing a Buddhist reflection strategy that he says he utilizes for outrage the board. Something I find specifically interesting about Kline as an entertainer is the manner in which he is by all accounts so focused. There is such neatness and freshness to every one of his developments, he talks obviously with his body. This control permits him to slip into a wide range of various characters in the film. He conceivably turns into a CIA specialist, a gay, and talks jibberish Italian, all in his endeavors to appear to be a learned person. Kline shows the control of a trapeze artist. At the point when he goes attempt to Archie, he does a fast, clean in reverse somersault and jump into a step. Development like this is so uncommon in film on the grounds that unobtrusively is required in close-ups. You can peruse all you would need to think about Otto by the manner in which he moves. He is somebody who needs severely to be savvy. He peruses Nitzche, yet as Wanda says he ââ¬Å"Doesnâ⬠t get itâ⬠. In their relationship with the chief, they appreciate a high level of trust, cooperation, backing and rewards. Then again, poor entertainers don't work out quite as well. They have all the earmarks of being for all time undesirable and are probably going to hold up under the brunt of administrative doubt and analysis. The impact is along these lines like the horns and corona impact, chiefs will in general appointed authority representatives as either fortunate or unfortunate, and afterward look for proof that bolsters that supposition. It was discovered that when a decent entertainer did ineffectively on an errand, bosses would in general disregard the disappointment or credit to the causes, for example, misfortune or awful planning; when they progressed admirably, their prosperity was ascribed exertion and capacity. Be that as it may, when a poor entertainer excelled on an undertaking, it was seldom credited to their exertion or capacity. What's more, when a poor entertainer didn't progress admirably, there was little wavering it refering to the reason as sluggishness or inadequacy. It isn't clear how directors make the qualification between great entertainers and poor entertainers. Whatever the models, it is unmistakably not objective, impartial or dependable. This inclination should unavoidably prompt a mutilation of the examination procedure. It should likewise be a wellspring of dissatisfaction for those representatives who are oppressed. Obviously, not every person who gets a poor evaluation result is a survivor of administrative inclination. The impacts examined here are propensities, not unchanging impacts. In any case, somewhat, apparently certain workers might be unjustifiably advantaged, while others are distraught, by predisposition impacts in the decisions of bosses. It is a basic rule of execution examination that workers ought to get the opportunity to improve their evaluation results - particularly if their past outcomes have not been so acceptable. It is an intense blemish during the time spent evaluation if this guideline is denied by and by. That was the case when Edward Li, a business major at the University of California-Irvines Merage School of Business, got a chance to work within one of the hottest young companies ââ¬â Uber.ââ¬Å"Although not everyone will intern after their first year of undergrad, coming from a non-target school for consulting, I really wanted to build up as much work experience as I could,â⬠Li says. ââ¬Å"I was applying to ââ¬â and getting rejected from ââ¬â a lot of 2018 summer internships.â⬠A San Francisco Bay Area native, Li was involved in many extracurriculars in high school, including student government, sports teams, and clubs. One of those clubs was the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), which he later became president of at his high school. During his time with the FBLA, Li says he was exposed to the world of business and competed in case study and business plan competitions at the local, state, and national level. In the process of preparing for the competitions, Li was paired with a strategy consultant professional to help guide him, and he says the connection convinced him to begin pursuing his interest in the business professional services industry, ideally in management consulting or risk advisory. As he persisted and applied to all the relevant internship opportunities he came across while wrapping up his first year of college, Li says he was getting worried that it was too late to secure an internship. In May last year, he came across a listing where Uber was seeking a ââ¬Å"Restaurant Partnership Onboarding Internâ⬠while looking for opportunities on LinkedIn. Li, a Silicon Valley town of Cupertino, says his familiarity with the brand led him to apply but he was not expecting a reply.ââ¬Å"When I was in high school, Uber was revered as one of the most influential unicorn, startups of its time, Li says. The internship listing seemed really interesting because it was on the Uber Eats team and described work to expand the restaurant partners on the platform. I did not know as much about Uber Eats, but I love food, and it was EasyApply, so I decided to send in an application.â⬠Edward Li. Courtesy photoLANDING THE INTERNSHIPWithin a week of applying, Li says he was invited to a phone screening with a recruiter where he was asked some behavioral questions and about his resume. That was followed by a similar video interview with the same recruiter. When he passed that, he was sent a written and analytical exercise via email that consisted of responding to a lengthy email from a hypothetical Uber Eats restaurant partner and utilizing formulas to pull and analyze restaurant data in Excel. And finally, he took part in a second round video interview where he spoke with multiple people who were pod leads for the Western Region SMB (Small and Medium Businesses) Restaurant Onboarding, Southern Region SMB Restaurant Onboarding, and U.S. Canada Enterprise Restaurant Onboarding team for Uber Eats. While Li took the interview via video, he says that the company asks those based in the San Francisco area to interview in person.Things moved fast and by early June, Li received an offer for the summer internship. ââ¬Å"I was really excited but this was literally the Friday before finals week so I was also stressed at the time,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"I remember having to do all the paperwork and tax documents during finals week which was rough but I was very relieved I found a summer internship and excited to start.â⬠INTERNING AT A PRE-IPO COMPANYFor 12 weeks starting in June, Li says his days usually started off with his family dropping him off at the CalTrans station in Sunnyvale to catch the 7:32 a.m. train. After one and a half hours, Li would arrive in San Francisco and take the 3 0-minute walk to one of Uberââ¬â¢s three corporate offices in San Francisco, arriving at about 9:30 a.m. Li made sure to stop by one of Ubers many food spots for employees for breakfast before heading to his workspace.ââ¬Å"They had smoothie machines, lox, bagels, avocado, fresh fruit, and plenty of snacks and drinks,â⬠Li says. ââ¬Å"After breakfast, we would usually have a team meeting of some sort: all SMB Onboarding, Self-Sign Up, or West Region SMB.â⬠On a day-to-day basis, Li says he was hired into a cohort of interns to assist the Restaurant Partner Onboarding teams in the Uber Eats Operations division. Onboarding a restaurant partner is the process that takes place after an Uber Eats salesperson has closed a sale and convinced a restaurant owner to join the Uber Eats Platform. Li says his team then takes over the account via Salesforce and begins a series of operations processes to get it live and available to customers on the app. ââ¬Å"We had to work on this step-by-step that described the onboarding process in specific detail and formatting it with screenshots and video gifs, Li says. We worked on this project while simultaneously managing our onboarding accounts. The day before it was due, the other intern and I started extra late to finish and prioritized the accounts during normal business hours. I learned that dividing the work and specializing can really speed up a large project.â⬠Amid plenty of stressful deadlines and steep learning curves, Li says he also shared plenty of memorable experiences with the team at Uber Eats. From participating in a spicy food eating contest and winning a Spicy Food Uber Eats t-shirt, to meeting with the team at the Ferry Building in San Francisco, he says they shared many laughs. Towards the end of his internship, Li says the team hired a group of fresh graduates from all over the country and it was fun training and meeting new people. USING THE POSITION TO NETWORK WITH UC-IRVINE ALUMSWorking at a tech upstart can create some interesting and unique ways of connecting with others. Li says that the internal Uber employee database is nicknamed ââ¬Å"Whoberâ⬠and whenever he had any free time, he would use it and the internal chat function on their intranet to reach out to people who wrote in their LinkedIn profiles that they too worked at Uber in the San Francisco area.Through this, Li says he connected with University of California-Irvine alumni in various positions at Uber, including the accounting, software engineering, and supply chain departments. ââ¬Å"I messaged them and set up informational lunches and learned about their different positions and what they did in their job,â⬠Li says. â⬠It was really easy because the internal chat function made my outreach really credible and since I had an employee ID card I could meet them at any of the three Uber corporate offices in S.F.â⬠WHEN ONE INTERNSHIP LEADS TO ANOTHERWhile at Uber, Li says he was assi gned a supervisor with whom he met bi-weekly. He also connected with his supervisorââ¬â¢s boss at the beginning and end of the internship. Li added that the team also had frequent programming that brought in former onboarding interns that had moved to full-time positions in Sales or Marketing as well as presentations and guest speaker events involving Uber executives from other service lines such as Uber Freight and other high-level executives that reported directly to the C-suite and had been around since the early inception of Uber. While most interns are thankful for their experiences, Li says he was exceptionally fortunate as the onboarding team began downsizing due to automation after he left and will no longer be needing summer interns.ââ¬Å"I essentially got really lucky to intern on this team when they needed help beefing up their Uber Eats operations before Uberââ¬â¢s IPO and the automation of the process,â⬠he says. Though he wonââ¬â¢t be returning to Uber t his year, his time at Uber has already paid off as Li says having the brand on his resume helped him secure a 2019 summer internship offer at Seagate on the Business Excellence and Business Process Management team in Longmont, Colorado. ââ¬Å"I am looking forward to meeting new people and having new experiences in a completely different state,â⬠Li says. ââ¬Å"The work that I will be doing is also very exciting, as I will be working in a team that is project-based and focused on improving and benchmarking internal processes. This will allow me to work cross-functionally with many different departments within Seagate and pick up data analysis skills in Excel and data presentation skills in Tableau.â⬠MOVING FORWARD AS A BIZ MAJORIn line with his adventurous nature and a go-getter personality, Li says he plans to volunteer on a farm on the weekends when he isnââ¬â¢t exploring Colorado or networking in Denver to diversify his scope of experiences. He has already contacted some nonprofit farms and is working to make arrangements for lessons in cow milking, and receiving fresh milk and eggs, in exchange for his labor on the farm.Li is now a second-year student and says he is still reaching towards his dreams in business. Currently the Executive Vice President of the Merage Undergraduate Student Association and Vice President of Professional Activities of Delta Sigma Pi, a professional co-ed business fraternity, he says he hopes to eventually become president of both organizations. And in five years, he hopes all his work has helped him join the professional services industry in management consultant before applying to a top MBA program. Not all first-year students are as certain of what they want as Li. Starting college is often a challenging enough time for many young adults. And while Li says he probably isnââ¬â¢t in a position to be giving anyone advice, he says what really helped him was starting early and constantly learning. ââ¬Å"Learn in yo ur business classes, other classes, free webinars, books, news articles, part-time jobs, internships, LinkedIn, networking, informational interviews, friends, etcetera,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"I have found the earlier you start the easier it is. People also love talking about their job and mentoring someone younger than them.â⬠DONT MISS: HOW A VIRAL LINKEDIN POST LED TO A MICROSOFT INTERNSHIP or THE WORLDS MOST ATTRACTIVE EMPLOYERS FOR BIZ MAJORS Page 1 of 11 marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-79011721022327990252020-05-26T05:46:00.001-07:002020-05-26T05:46:03.159-07:00Impacts of Affirmative Action on Asian- Americans - Free Essay Example Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1530 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/10/30 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Affirmative Action Essay Did you like this example? Abstract This paper expresses misconduct against Asian- Americans in the college applications process scene. Affirmative action affects not only those of Asian descent but impacts other minority races such as African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics. This paper examines the Harvard court case on Asian discrimination and other minorities through the use of SAT scores and Interviews. Introduction Despite Americas long rough history with the oppression of minority groups, one might think individuals have learned from past mistakes. However, revisions have been unfavorable. Loopholes have been found and racism is done under handedly. Applications, hopes of success, and dreams of a better education are held in the hands of corruption. Stereotypes are chained to the futures of Asian- Americans. It is a crime to aspire to be a doctor and save the lives of people in need. It is a crime to have a stereotypical extracurricular talent such as playing the violin. If you really wanted to be a part of the ivy league community you should break the stereotypes. But how can someone break a stereotype they didnt knew they had? It is something placed against someone without consent. Since Asians are good at math, they should score much higher than everyone else in the minority pool. Acceptance should be based on capability but instead after pure qualification, is based on a personality test a t Harvard and many other schools. This allows for the cleaning of the minority pool and this is where the association of stereotypes comes in. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Impacts of Affirmative Action on Asian- Americans" essay for you Create order Capability should also be based on what your progress was over the past three to four years of high school; instead, the focus has shifted to who can score higher on a three hour test?. It is unfortunate- the competition and cut-throat setting this process has caused. Fears of Harvard becoming an Asian school, or god- forbid a school with a majority of minorities, has extended to taking drastic measures causing chaos and distress. Finally, it has been challenged in the Supreme court. Literature Review: In recent news, such as Asian American Coalition, Harvard has been accused in engaging in a systematic discrimination against Asian Americans who apply for admissions. Despite proof that most of these applicants are very well qualified, Harvard backs their claim by Establishing racial quotas and penalization of Asian- American applicants by judging upon racial non academic criteria such as racial stereotypes in the interview process. Business Insider explored the qualifications an asia n must possess in order to surpass another race. One of those include Asian-American students SAT scores have to be 140 points higher than white students, 270 points higher than Hispanic students, and 450 points higher than black students. A stronger fact to support my claim, is the clear discriminatory distinction an interviewer listed on an applicants file during an interview plays the violin, and of course, wants to become a doctor. However, this is not only a phenomenon happening at Harvard, colleges have turned the tables of what was once a badge of honor, to an overbearing obstacle in the admissions process. The reality is, it never occurs to caucasians, who have factors other than their SATs and grades considered for admission that they are the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action. Policies are designed to favor them for reasons that have nothing to do with their academic accomplishments. Origins of Affirmative Action Affirmative Action was first enacted by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, although this concept was introduced in the early 1900s. According to Cornell law, Affirmative Action is defined as A set of procedures designed to eliminate unlawful discrimination among applicants, remedy the results of such prior discrimination, and prevent such discrimination in the future. One of the first occurrences of Affirmative Action that related to race, was during the U.S. involvement in World War II. Many African-Americans contributed to the war effort while still being subject to Jim Crow segregation laws. A civil rights activist, A. Philip Randolph, led a nationwide effort to protest to express grievances. This March on Washington Movement was planned to be a demonstration on the U.S. Capitol, taking place on July 1, 1941. On June 25, 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt, issued Executive Order 8802, which created the first Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) and forced defense contractors To provide for the full and equitable participation of all workers in defense industries, without discrimination However, Executive Order 8802 did not use the term Affirmative Action. It was the first presidential order of President Johnson to lay the groundwork for later implementations of this public policy. President Johnsons order was later expanded to even include the non- discrimination of women. Many colleges and universities also adopted Affirmative Action policies to increase their minority enrollment. These policies usually took the form of preferences in admissions for applicants of a minority race, although some colleges generated strict quotas or reserved a specific number of spots for minorities. The use of affirmative action in all of these areas was initially intended to be temporary. However, the goals of affirmative action policies shifted from equality of opportunity, to the equal representation and outcomes for minorities. According to a c-span report on U.S population distribution by race, in 1960, the Caucasian population made up 88.6%. The African American population was 10.5%, leaving other minority races 1.9%. This phenomenon maintained for almost a decade. The issue was once to appease one minority race; this however, is not the case anymore. Like many changes in American society, racial representation has changed as well. Harvard Court Case Harvard has been accused of giving lower personality ratings to Asian-American applicants. The news reminded many Asian-Americans of some painful stereotypes that might have been disguised with a title such as Harvard. Part of why Asian-Americans have a complex in getting into an elite college is the belief that the prestige or title of the institution will draw away attention from people associating them with stereotypes. When Trump first took office, the Justice Department dug up a two-year-old complaint against Harvard that alleges the school has quotas on how many Asian Americans it accepts. It opened an investigation into Harvards admissions practices, which many feared would create a chilling effect on other schools with affirmative action programs. Asian Stereotypes While the current stereotype of Asian-Americans is that they are smart, a century ago, Asians and Asian-Americans were perceived by the Western World as savages or full of filth and disease. They were perceived as marginal members of the human race, and were denied the right to become naturalized U.S. citizens. According to The New York Times, the 2016 Post-Election National Asian-American Survey shows that South Asians and Southeast Asians are less likely to be perceived as intelligent when compared with East Asians. Reports of hate crimes, qualitative studies of the Asian-American population, and common racial slurs express that South Asians are more likely to fall victim to stereotypes about terrorism. These stereotypes might have no direct affect on college admissions, but they play a role in how different Asian-American groups experience discrimination in society. SAT Injustice Data shows tests like the SAT are biased against students from low-income households. Poorer students tend to perform worse on the test. The difference might be the costly prep courses, books and tutors, some experts say. Blacks and Hispanics also consistently score lower on the SAT than whites. According to NPR, a new study finds that scores on standardized tests are of little value in predicting students performance in college. This being said, many colleges have given applicants the opportunity to submit their application under test optional. When a college considers going test-optional, one of the first reactions that people, including alumni, feel is that the college will be admitting less qualified students, he added. Syverson says the study should reassure admissions officials whove decided to go test-optional. Affirmative Action in China In China, there is affirmative action in education for minority nationalities. This may equate to lowering minimum requirements for the National University Entrance Examination (gaokao), which is a mandatory exam for all students to enter university. This exam can be compared to the SAT or ACT. It also tests english that to many English speakers is very hard to understand. Some universities even set quotas for minority students. Further, minority students enrolled in ethnic minority-oriented specialties (e.g. language and literature programs) are provided with scholarships and/or pay no tuition, and are granted a monthly stipend. Limitations Regarding extensive research, there are personal biases, personal experiences, and other impeding factors to acknowledge. One of those being my racial bias being Asian- American. I do not come from a low income family which is important to acknowledge when discussing the majority of minority applicants. Furthermore, I am in the college application process; hence why I sought interest in this topic. Although I have done pervasive research on the Harvard court case, I am only limited to sources speaking on the court case rather than personally experiencing the trial myself. I plan on applying to well known schools; however, I am not applying to one of the private Ivy League schools such as Harvard. This issue is recent and I am mostly limited to online sources rather books written in this study. marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-90453709577630650832020-05-18T21:13:00.001-07:002020-05-18T21:13:05.257-07:00There are many different type of birth controls, so I did... The documents on European Imperialism provide evidence for how the individuals in the Congo are being exploited for European benefit, under the profit-making aim of King Leopold II. European brutality in the Congo was the logical result of the European desire to implement ââ¬Ëproperââ¬â¢ civilization in the Congo, albeit through a lack of cultural understanding and compassion towards the people of Congo. First, the document ââ¬Å"Selections from the 1885 Berlin Act (Treaty)â⬠was an outline to the European people that King Leopold II had good intentions for his mission in the Congo. However, it depicted the contradiction of what his true intentions were and what had actually occurred. King Leopold outlined six Declarations for what he desired to change for the Congo. Leopold stated, for instance, his desire to create a change in the freedom of trade for th e people of the Congo, as well the creation of ââ¬Å"a Declaration relative to the slave trade, and the operations by sea or land which furnish slaves to that trade.â⬠These Declarations relate to the thesis of how the Europeans were directed in a way to think it was logical to create a change in the significant issues in the Congo. It has swept across nations and has left desolation in its path. It has also caused the rise of countries, creating a rebirth of freedom and independence. Violence is a weapon that is wielded in both hands by too much power or too little. As said by Edward Bond, a playwright, ââ¬Å"violence shapes and obsesses our society, and if we do not stop being violent we have no future.â⬠In the culture of men, it is something that has to exist if masculinity is desired. In the culture of the world, violence exists to create change. While Fight Club and First Blood involve violence in unique and fluctuating forms, all the books and movies use it as a means for change. Then, there is Fight Club. The narrator starts off as a uniform white collared business worker who is a consumer in every means. His apartment full of the most updated furnishings, all very materialistic items. He lives a disgruntled yet content life. He hates his boss, but chooses to deal with it in order to keep his job and earn salary. He lives a very normal life of an American citizen. It is enough to see chills running up and down the procedures of goods and services. The shock waves that originate with product failures or dissatisfied consumers is ill wind that does nobody any good. The effects of such shock waves are bound to radiate throughout the entire economy and society. The question then is canââ¬â¢t this situation be avoided or controlled? The answer is fairly simple but economically important. Consumption is a fundamental part of every economic and social system and changes in consumer behavior have varying implications for the whole society. Consumption patterns reflect the personality of the individual. Fundamental institutions are not left out because a great deal of consumption takes place through the family. Computers and the Internet have expanded the way in which information can be delivered to the students of today. Today's networking technologies provide a valuable opportunity to practice new learning techniques. Educators are discovering that computers are facilitating learning. Computer based communications, or Telecommunications, can offer many educational opportunities; therefore, educators will need to adapt current teaching methods to incorporate this new media into the classroom. Computers have made a fundamental impact in most industries, providing a competitive advantage that has come to be essential to many businesses. Therefore, schools must also use technology to improve the educational process. School systems often consider purchasing a computer network, and justify its purchase by applying it to routine administrative tasks, such as attendance records and grading. While these tasks are very important, they only show a small part of what technology can do for a school. Technology must go further than simply keeping attendance; it must focus on keeping students interested and productive. Since computers and the Internet have expanded in such a way in which education can be delivered to students, it is currently possible to engage in distance education through the Internet. Distance education involves audio and video links between teachers and students in remote areas. Video conferencing allows groups to communicate with each other. Desktop video conferencing promises to bring students together from geographic and cultural distances, face to face via computer. Not only will the teacher talk to the students, but the students will be able to interact with each other. This will make students more interested and fascinated with learning. Not only does the Internet and video conferencing help education, but new programs designed for educational purposes are being developed. Dictionaries, encyclopedias and atlases that a student can access from his own computer can be a definite advantage. For example, instead of looking for a particular country and simply finding out where it is in a regular atlas, that can type in the name of that country, and not only will they find out where it is faster, but they will obtain more information about that particular country. Instead of having volumes and volumes of heavy encyclopedias, technology has enabled companies to place all of these massive books onto one small CD. This CD is much simpler than the unpleasant job of flipping page by page just to read about an uninteresting topic, such as history. Writing reports on a type-writer was a displeasing method to write term papers; especially if that student runs out of white-out. Certain programs offer a spell-checker, thesaurus, and other helpful features, which make writing that term-paper easier. These particular programs are only a few of the educational resources available to students. Most educational boards should be open to any new idea that technology has to offer. It would not be fair for a student in a particular city to receive a better education than another student in a different city. Technology is not meant to replace teachers, but is there to serve students to make tedious tasks easier. Therefore, this technology should be available to every student, wherever they may live. In doing this, it not only needs the support of teachers and educators, but it also requires support from communities. However, technology can not work by itself. Teachers must take a position in designing a tech-powered classroom curriculum, devoting time to become familiar with the new available resources. Technology can also improve writing with the use of new word processing programs that provide easy to use tools that are not normally available in the classroom. Technology is able to help students in a variety of ways. By making learning more enjoyable, students will want to learn and will not see education as such a difficult responsibility. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Education marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-87518201842158180332020-04-11T23:16:00.001-07:002020-04-11T23:16:04.881-07:00Essay Sample - Essay of the Likeness and Dislike of the Atkins Diet ProgramEssay Sample - Essay of the Likeness and Dislike of the Atkins Diet ProgramWhen you're reading an essay on the Atkins diet program, there are a number of things you can do to help enhance the essay. The condition is a learning disorder, and it depicts a development issue in the brain. Children with autism and autistic spectrum disorder find it hard to interact with other children of their age, and when in school, teachers, and other pupils consider the autistic children as ââ¬Å"difficultâ⬠. However, autism can be managed very well. Children with autism need nursing care to bring out the best from them. According to a research conducted by Marcus Autism Center, children with autism are at risk of poor feeding and feeding disorder (Woodruff Health Sciences Center , 2013 para.1). It is notable that proper and healthy meals help children to develop mentally by socializing during meals, but autistic children do not experience that. Good nursing practice are needed to ensure that autism does not affect feeding and health of a child. Children with Autism at Considerable Risk of Nutritional Deficits and Feeding Problems The Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine and the Marcus Autism Center were the first institutions to conduct a research on the issue (Woodruff Health Sciences Center, 2013). First of all, it is not clear what causes autism. It may be genetic since the condition runs in families. Scientists have conducted several other researches to determine the brain sections that lead to the condition (Woodruff Health Sciences Center, 2013). The investigation carried out involved using all peer reviewed articles written on autism and feeding problems. A meta-analysis of the peer reviewed articles was conducted by researchers from Emory University and Marcus Autism Center. From the research, they noted that most children diagnosed with the condition have a lower intake of calcium and protein, and also have a high number of other nutritional problems (Woodruff Health Sciences Center , 2013). Some of the feeding problems that children with autism experience include allergies for many food products. Therefore, the nurses should monitor the feeding habits of children, and ensure that the children eat food which is full of nutritional value (Woodruff Health Sciences Center, 2013). Secondly, autistic children also suffer from pica, a condition in which they eat nonfood materials, which is also a feeding and behavioral deficiency that nurses must observe and restrain. The peer reviewed literature meta-analysis did not indicate that feeding disorders in autistic children resulted from the fact that they had a diet with only a few types of food. However, the Marcus Autism Centre researchers subtly indicated that parents of autistic children complained that few foods make up the diets of their autistic children (Woodruff Health Sciences Center , 2013). As a result of this meta-analysis conducted by researchers from Emory University and Marcus Autism Centre, nurses and caregivers of autistic children now have a chance to make the diets of children right by ensuring that they give supplementary nutrients such as proteins and calcium in the form of tablets or injections. The information is essential in making long-term decisions on the management plan for autistic children and the management of other health issues which they have. Another significant impact of the Emory University and Marcus Autism Center research is that the nurses dealing with autistic children can develop a guideline on how to cope with the condition of those children who suffer from autism. Elimination diet has traditionally been used by nurses in coping with the adverse reactions which autistic children have to some types of food, but now it is clear that utilizing the elimination diet strategy could have a malnutrition potential for those involved (Brown-Guttovz, 2008 p.29). This is what drives the nursing community helping the autistic people to determine the best way of dealing with the feeding disorders. The Emory and Marcus Autism Center research was unique and it aimed at improving nursing process for the autistic children. Early Feeding Problems that Indicate Autism Early diagnosis of any condition is beneficial because it helps in determining the right strategies of coping and managing the impacts of the condition. Researchers at the University of Bristol in England noted that children who have feeding disorders are most likely to be autistic (Neale, 2010 Para. 5). This opens a primary method for early diagnosis of ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) which would help in nursing of such children especially in managing their diet and nutrition. According to the study conducted by Golding and his colleagues, children with autism are selective on the food they eat and accept solid foods way later as compared to those who do not suffer from the condition. They are also not easy to feed, and nurses or parents have to struggle to feed them (Land, 2001 p.10). They are slow feeders and accept very few varied diets. Diagnosis should not be entirely dedicated to the feeding habits; hence, the discovery that children are pervasive food refusers or slow feeders, and other factors such as their speech, attention and behaviors should also be scrutinized to determine if they could be suffering from autism (Neale, 2010 para.8). To come to that conclusion, the researchers asked parents to fill questionnaires with information on feeding and dietary habits of their children at different stages in life starting with 6 to 54 weeks, and when the children were at the age of 7, their heights were measured (Neale, 2010 para.8). The information collected from the questionnaires was compared with the information collected on children who have ASD and those who did not have. The patterns of feeding were identified the characteristic of resistance towards change exhibited by autistic children and, hence, found to be very important in early diagnosis of the condition for easy management. SWEAA ââ¬â A Self-Report Questionnaire Targeting Eating Disturbances within the Autism Spectrum Children with ASD are sometimes thought to be fussy eaters. In many cases, caregivers and parents withhold food from fussy eaters so that they can eat when hungry. With children suffering from ASD, this strategy is dangerous (Karlsson, Rà ¥stam, Wentz, 2013 p.2225). Wentz et.al developed a self reliant questionnaire which people filled to determine how their eating habits were affected by autism. This questionnaire is useful for teenagers and young adults who have autistic spectrum. However, the young adults must have an IQ of over 70 or have no potential for diagnosis of intellectual disability (Karlsson, Rà ¥stam, Wentz, 2013 p.2225). The Swedish Eating Assessment for Autism spectrum disorders (SWEAA) research conducted by Wentz et.al showed that people with ASD prefer food of certain colors and taste. They were also unable to eat because of the inability to eat certain foods and cut at the foods with the utensils provided (Lesinskiene, Pà «ras, Kajokiene, Senina, 2002). Thirdly, the traditional setup of the eating place in which there was a sense of sociability was a challenge for people with autism because most of them prefer to do things on their own, but not in a place where there are other people. This indicated that people with ASD could suffer from different other disorders especially related to allergies and phobias, and the best way to handle such cases is by ensuring that these people are well understood (Pinto-Martin, Souders, Giarelli, Levy, 2005 p.164). Secondly, the SWEAA questionnaire is very essential because it helps in knowing the types of foods that the autistic individual does not naturally take so that substitutes are made available for the individual, and the nutritional balance in the body is maintained (Spurgeon, 1967 p.1416). It is quite unhealthy to withhold food for an autistic individual because such an individual may get malnutrition. John 2004 Reflective Model Johns model of reflection is based on five main questions. The cue questions enable an individual to break an issue into several stages including the process, outcomes and experience. In the determination of nursing issues, Johns reflection model was utilized. The breakdown of its application is shown in the discussion below. Description of the Experience At this stage, the knowledge of how autism is manifested in individuals is very important. The investigations conducted all focused on the feeding problems associated with the autistic children and the implications which these children might get from the feeding problems. Children with such conditions also have great potential to lack good social skills, especially those which are acquired during meals. Parents and caregivers of children with this condition understand better how the children behave with food. It was noted that children with ASD usually accepted solid food later in life as compared to their peers. Autistic children are also choosy on the foods they take (Neale, 2010 para.4). The research conducted by Jean Golding and her colleagues also indicated that some were slow eaters, while others were quite troublesome during feeding (Neale, 2010 para.2). In the Emory University and Marcus Autism Center research, an analysis of case recorded about autism and feeding problems were subjected to meta-analysis to come to a conclusion. In the Jean Golding research, parents and caregivers were asked to fill questionnaires which were used in the determination of the impact of autism on feeding, and the SWEAA study involved young adults and teens with ASD. The teens and young adults were required to fill in the questionnaires on their own (Karlsson, Rà ¥stam, Wentz, 2013 p.2226). The information collected from the three empirical researches was subjected to scrutiny and compared to that of feeding behaviors of people without ASD and the difference noted. The Goals and Objectives of the Researches All three researches, the Emory University and Marcus Autism Centre, the Jean Golding headed Bristol University research and SWEAA study, had one main goal and objective which they wanted to achieve. The goal was to determine the extent of feeding problems associated with autism and the consequences they have on health and nutrition of people suffering from the condition, and hence, and secondly, to determine the best nursing strategy which would impacts of autism to the people diagnosed with the condition. It is necessary to keep in mind that they all suffer allergies towards some food, they have a dislike for foods of certain colors, and more importantly, they suffer a low intake of calcium and proteins. These are some of the issues which nurses consider to define the relevant supplements or alternative feeding which can be used. Influencing Factors Age is one of the most important factors influencing the study. If feeding disorders are discovered early, they can be used to diagnose the condition early. Early diagnosis leads to early intervention for children with ASD, including offering substitutes and food supplements in their diet to ensure that the feeding disorders do not affect their health. Secondly, it is notable that early diagnosis of any condition offers the best chance for effective management, and hence, it is beneficial in nursing. Good nursing practice requires the individual to have a guideline for management. What Could Have Been Improved The articles selected for these assignments are all articles which deal with feeding disorders among the autistic children. However, although they are empirical and they give detailed information on the consequences of the disorders among the autistic, it is worth noting that they do not have mathematical representation, which could be essential for quantification. This would have been appropriate and quite beneficial for the study. Research Outcomes There are many issues that an individual can learn from the exercise. First of all, children with autism are not difficult to feed simply because they want to be rebellious, but because they have allergies for some foods. ASD affects some functions of the brain which cause autistic people to be choosy at what they eat or to have repetitive behavior. It is, however, not certain why children with autism have some allergic reactions to some foods since there is not direct connection of the brain functions with the diet. Secondly, it is important to develop a diet which can help in substituting the foods which the autistic children do not like, because it would be even harder to nurse the autistic children if they are in bad health. Lastly, some of the traditional strategies used in managing choosy children cannot be applied to children with autism, and hence, it is important for parents to enlist the help of professional nurses with knowledge and experience in handling such children. If food is denied to force them to eat it when hungry, they may still not take it because they do not refuse to take on their volition, but as a direct response from the brain triggered by color of food, smell or taste as a result of brain function. Conclusion The study involves analyzing three empirical researches on a learning disorder in regards to nursing. The condition chosen is autism, which is a learning disorder and quite challenging in nursing. Three studies have been analyzed and a John 2004 model of reflection used on the three studies. The intention is to help in further understanding of autism and its implications in nursing. Overall, strategic planning is long-term plan to optimize the resources to sustain competitive advantage and achieve the corporate goals. Different words and phrases have been used by different thinkers but basically, it is a long-term planning with definite goals. Hence, a formal strategic plan should consist of written plans; it should cover more than a year of activity. This should be formulated taking into consideration the strategic alternatives and identity the resource requirements. Strategic planning has been defined as ââ¬Ëthe devising and formulation of organisational level plans which set the broad and flexible objectives, strategies and policies of a business, driving the organisation towards its vision of the futureââ¬â¢ (cited by Aldehayyat & Anchor, 2008). When speaking of strategy as a plan, Mintzberg and Quinn specified two essential characteristics about strategy ââ¬â it is made in advance of the actions to which it applies and it is developed consciously and purposefully (Dooris, Kelley & Trainer, 2002). Mintzberg had earlier recognized strategy as a broader concept than ââ¬Ëplanningââ¬â¢. It could also be seen as a ââ¬ËPloyââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËPositionââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËPerspectiveââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËPatternââ¬â¢ (Anderson & Atkins, 2001). Even Quinnââ¬â¢s definition of strategy included planning as a part of strategy formulation. Planning, according to Dooris, Kelley and Trainer (2002) is concerned with improving oneââ¬â¢s condition and pertains to market share and improving profits. As a structured management discipline and practice, strategic planning is still in its nascent stage. Strategic planning has been considered as ââ¬Ëthe one best wayââ¬â¢ to devise and implement strategies that would enhance the competitiveness of each business unit. The concept emerged during turbulent times of the 1970s, when the energy crisis and other unanticipated marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-74633504840136127262020-02-07T20:47:00.001-08:002020-02-07T20:47:03.049-08:00Economics of Money and Banking Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 wordsEconomics of Money and Banking - Essay Example Investments are a boon for the progress of any economy. This does not imply that the commercial banks would charge negative interest rates to the investors in order to boost up investment thresholds in the country. The banking institutions may offer loans at zero interest rates. Zero interest rate policy under taken by the central bank of a country is a situation where they charge a low nominal rate of interest (Woodford, 2001). This is associated with stimulating the economy, when the pace of economic development is low in a nation. Interest rates can never be negative, a negative interest rate charged on loans is a hypothetical state where the bank would offer concessions on loans charged to the investors or borrowers. This will not only involve loss of gross reserve in a bank but also lead to non potential investments in the economy. The commercial banks will land up offering loans on risky and unviable projects and thus may be forced to offer implicit bail outs to many failed pro jects in the economy. This would make the overall investment market uncertain in the economy. Thus, interest rate charged on loans can never be negative. The Taylors rule is a model used for determining the interest rates in the economy; it was introduced by John Taylor in 1992. This rule explained the different interest rates that the Federal Reserve would probably set in future in United States, based on the theory of rational expectations in macroeconomics. Taylor framed his model assuming that all the economic entities in the market will always have positive expectations about the future economy. The Taylors model cannot consider the long term prospects of an economy (Asso, Kahn and Leeson, 2010). As taken in this essay, the Taylors formula is: r=p+0.75(5.5%-u) + 0.5(p-2) + 2. Where r = Federal funds rate. u= Unemployment rate. p= Rate of inflation. Fig 1: Federal Fund Interest Rates by Taylors Rule Years Federal Fund Rate à ® 01/03/10 -1.24 01/06/10 -1.48 01/09/10 -1.48 01/12/ 10 -1.40 01/03/11 0.02 01/06/11 -1.25 01/09/11 -1.18 01/12/11 -0.80 01/03/12 0.19 01/06/12 -0.58 01/09/12 -0.28 01/12/12 -0.28 (Source: STLOUISFED, 2013a; STLOUISFED, 2013b) The table above shows the different quarterly rates of interest, the Federal Reserve could set in 2010, 2011 and 2012 according to the Taylors Rule. ââ¬Å"Yesâ⬠, following the above schedule it can be concluded that the Taylors rule suggested keeping the federal funds rate negative in the recent years. This is because the economy is facing recessionary trails in the market in the last few years. A negative interest rate would suggest the Federal Reserve to set expansionary monetary policies and augment the velocity of circulation of money in the U.S. economy. Task 2 In normal market conditions, Taylors rule suggested that the federal funds rate must be such that the inflation and real interest rates in the economy would be 2% and the rate of unemployment naturally existing in the economy would be 6%. Howev er considering the present recessionary trails in the market the Taylors rule have suggested that the federal funds rate must be negative to induce monetary easing in the crisis economy of U.S. The Taylors rule has become an important pivotal support for most of the policies framed by the federal bank. However, the analysis about different economic outcomes made by the Federal Bank is much deeper than the other central banks in the globe. Taylors rule viewed that the U.S. economy was in a crisis in the recent years, it was desirable for the U.S. central bank to simply adopt marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-80916449567163165232020-01-29T12:44:00.001-08:002020-01-29T12:44:03.451-08:00Dependency Theory and Colonial Heritage Essay Example for Free Dependency Theory and Colonial Heritage Essay Many have tried to draw upon the legacy of the colonial system to explain the reasons for underdevelopment in many areas of the world. Most areas that suffer from poverty today are former colonies the developed nations, for the most part, are former metropoles. The colonizers exploited their underlings in colonies, turning them into suppliers of cheap raw materials and restricting the infrastructure construction, leaving former colonies with only basic facilities. In many cases, when the colonizers departed, the nations were left with artificial boundaries that separated them from each other without regard for their historical development. This fuelled subsequent separatism and military conflicts, hampering economic progress. Thus, if one looks at straight-line boundaries in Africa which we are now learning in DS 202, it becomes obvious that those were artificially created. The colonizers, in particular the British Empire, were suppressing the industrial development in their colonies because they viewed them as sources of cheap imports and at the same time large markets for their industrial goods. An example of north-eastern Brazil that often surfaces in literature on underdevelopment, (Taylor 2001) claims that north eastern Brazil in the 19th century would have appeared to be an ideal place for a textile industry with its high quality cotton and existing demand for sugar bags cloth and slave clothing. However, to develop the textile industry, it would take years during which the industry should have been shielded from foreign competition with import tariffs and quotas. This was surely not something Britain would allow in its colony. As a result, the fledgling Brazilian textile enterprises proved unable to withstand the competition with Britains textile industry. Britain, like almost any metropole, was interested in selling to the colony, not developing industry inside it. As of 1822, when Brazil received independence, it was a larger export market for Britain than all the rest of Latin America combined (Taylor, 2001). Naturally, even as Brazil proclaimed independence, Britain did not want to lose this lucrative market and demanded a trade treaty with Britain which prohibited import substitution tariffs (Taylor, 2001). Brazil was forced into this treaty by its political weakness. In this way, former metropolitan powers keep control of their former colonies to varying extents, blocking their effective development. In newly independent nations of Latin America, for instance, the warfare thatà often preceded proclamation of independence devastated regional and national economies (Kinsbruner 1994 pg 126). Although this perspective is not universally recognised, the IMF and the World Bank for imposing policies said to aggravate third world countries. The stated goals of both institutions are certainly to spearhead economic growth in nations they service with their financial programs. Critics , however , point out that loans from the World Bank and the IMF often come with conditions that block the road to sustainable development and make poverty even worse . The Structural Adjustment Policies (SAPs) imposed by the IMF as a prerequisite for qualifying for its loans often aggravate the deplorable condition of the third world nation. Thus, SAPs often call for reduction in government expenditures for health, education and other government services for the sake of debt repayment. In this way, third world nations are dragged into the quagmire of debt repayment, as their interest provides income for Wall Street banks and other financial institutions. IMF policies urge third world countries to increase their exports of raw materials and agricultural products in to cope with debt an immediate concern. This, however, reduces the amount of food available to the poor inside the country and can lead to starvation second, does not create conditions for building processing industries that will increase value added inside the country. Besides, the IMF often demands for liberal market reforms that involve privatisation that, without proper preparation a nd evaluation of potential consequences, can lead to loss of jobs, aggravation of the social situation and civil unrest. Such measures lead to social discontent that can hamper the development of economies in developing countries. With respect to harmful policies imposed by the fund, Amin notes that the key to development is subordination of outside relations to the logic of internal development and not the reverse as it is happening when development policies are imposed by outside financial institutions (Amin, 1995 pg 10). The harmful role of the World Bank and the IMF in the development of poor nations is by no means indisputable. However, there are many criticisms aimed at the policies that accompany loans and the very idea of reaping interest income off the populations of the nations where starvation is a widely spread phenomenon. Political Aspects. Many regions of the world that demonstrate marked third world are characterised by overt concentration of power in the hands of a rich minority that uses this power to oppress the majority. For example, the North-eastern areas of Brazil that rely on sugar production as the primary source of income are seriously underdeveloped as compared to the rest of the nation. The property patterns in this region are the history of the dominant class manipulating social, political, and economic institutions so as to expropriate the maximum possible surplus from the rural workers (Taylor, 1978 pg 57). The economic interests of the land-owning class lay in extracting as much as possible from their plantations and workers as opposed to investing in the area. The result is miserable since an area that specialises in agricultural production cannot even feed its own citizens and has to import most of its agricultural produce from the rest of the nation. With a stagnant economic situation, the north-eastern Brazil has suffered from health education, and literacy standards that ended in a peasant revolt in the 1960s (Taylor, 1978 pg 157) Regional Inequalities. Many travellers to nations lik e China, India or the Caribbean are immediately impressed by the contrast between squalor of provincial areas and the apparent luxury of large cities and some ââ¬Ëadvancedââ¬â¢ areas. Regional inequalities contribute to underdevelopment, creating a situation when some areas are on their way toward modernisation, while others are forced into the backseat of social and economic progress. The importance of regional inequalities as source of underdevelopment is explored, for instance, in Andre Gunder Frank s 1989 publication The Development of Underdevelopment (Frank 1989) challenges the view that third world nations are still going through the stages that more developed countries are done with. Instead, he asserts that problems of underdeveloped areas are the inevitable result of the capitalist system. The same, in his mind, is true of the regional disparities observed in the third world countries where the capital and larger cities often stand out as oases of advancement among the generally gloomy landscape around. The underdevelopment phenomena in the province are the products of the historical development of the capitalist system no less than are the seemingly mor e modern or capitalist features of the national metropoles of the third world countries Frank (1989, pg 37). Education and Training. A well-trained and educated workforce is the necessary precondition for successful economic development. The presence of a large educated population contributes to Indias current rise as an outsourcing destination, althoughà it has so far failed to ensure overall prosperity in this nation. This problem, for instance, is addressed in Canadian programs targeting development of Aboriginal areas. The Indian entrepreneurship has to be supported with knowledgeable workforce that will attract capital flows to the areas. Although the fact that Native Americans missed the industrial revolution has its upside, as there is no need for re-training, integration of these people into the complex web of the global economy is a serious challenge (Kendall , 2001). Similar problems are experienced by many third world countries only in their case unlike the situation of Aboriginal populations in Canada, there is no strong nation to back them up in the efforts to increase their education. Cultural Factors. Culture, to some degree, can also adversely impact development or contribute to it. The modern world is patterned to a great extent after the Western cultures of the nations that have a dominant role in this world. Those that do not fit into these patterns will not achieve success as their development would ideally proceed along different lines. An example can be the case of Africa and Native Americans in Canada. Although living in a highly developed and prosperous nation, Native Americans, South Africa and even Zimbabwe, the Aboriginals fail to attain economic well-being. One reason that precludes their success is supposed to be their culture that envisages collective ownership and sharing of resources, as opposed to the idea of individual private rights that characterizes Western culture Kendall, (2001 pg 43). Industrial technology best develops in conditions that favour private ownership however, for these countries, it often means they have to abandon their cultural values which in most cases is not the case. CONCLUSION The difficulties of modernising and developing third world countries are multiple. More often than not different factors of third world countries will be present in areas affected by this problem, intertwined and perpetuating each other. Thus, the political situation marked by elite domination perpetuates economic inequalities that in their turn cause inadequacy of educational facilities and ensuing lack of local qualified specialists. Lack of medical services can lead to absence of effective family planning measures that in their turn lead to overpopulation and then to poverty as the national GDP struggles to catch up with economic growth.à Therefore, addressing a set of problems rather than separate issues is the cornerstone for building an effective development program. marmilicon1978http://www.blogger.com/profile/00929244949693478787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3928279685872256816.post-72263259420755195492020-01-21T09:07:00.001-08:002020-01-21T09:07:03.451-08:00What Is a Franchise? Essay -- essays research papers What Is a Franchise? Franchising is a form of business in which the owner, or franchiser, gives license to distribute products, services or methods of business to affiliated dealers, franchisees. In many cases franchisees are given exclusive access to a particular geographical area. The franchiser usually mandates uniform symbols, trademarks and standardized services. Thirty years ago franchising was a revolutionary new technology - a new and better way - a new and better way to retail goods, food products and services to the consumers. How was it greeted? The media called it a scam. Headlines were everywhere about how some little old lady lost her life savings to some flim flam franchise. Major fortune 500 companies were getting involved in franchising but these companies insisted that their names not be used in ads or magazine stories. Today franchising has turned into an $800 billion a year business. Experts estimate that today as much as one third of the goods and services in the U.S. are moved through franchising. It's hard to believe but franchising actually came within 11 votes of being outlawed by Congress of the United Sates of America. Essentially a franchise provides a tested formula for starting a business that has worked for others. It can save you from making costly errors, shorten your learning curve and help you make a profit more quickly. However, start-up costs are high and you are required to follow the company's specific procedures. He seems to think about his life as something destined to be what it is. Ahmad said that his friends did not make him bad; he was already bad to begin with. This demonstrates a way of thinking with a strong locus of control. He knew why he turned out to be a problem child and he did not blame his friends for his mistakes, crimes and decisions. But he did emphasize that his mother had told him what he was going to be in the future. As a child, Ahmad may have come to believe in this prophecy which is why he thinks like that. This tells us that Ahmad is capable of thinking logically; he actually did not blame his mother for turning out to be the person he is, but to him his mother was right in saying he was going to be a bad person in the future. Ahmad seems to have the ability to take responsibility for his actions and maybe in this case he can also plan for his future. These are the reasons why Ahmad can benefit with solution focused brief therapy.Solution focused brief therapy would help Ahmad think about his present situation which he already have done in his case interview. The focus of the therapy is on helping the client recognize his ability to negotiate, plan and act on his desired outcomes of the therapy even in one session. It is important to note that solution focused brief therapy believes that the client is motivated to achieve his goals in therapy, and Ahmad has all the indications that he is motivated. Moreover, solution focused brief therapy is suitable in cases where the client firmly believes that what he/she is cannot be changed but rather to be able to find the means to move on with their life. For Ahmad, the focus is not on knowing why he became like this but rather to plan for his goals after this therapy. Solution focused brief therapy had been found to work well with all kinds of clients even with children, thus increasing the suitability of the approach to this case. 2. Discuss some of key counseling issues that Ahmad is facingThe key counseling issues that Ahmad is presenting include a poor self-concept, a deterministic sense of where his life is heading and an inadequate relationship with significant others. Ahmad says that he is destined to be a thief just as his father was destined to be a drug addict. This tells us that Ahmad had begun on the path of self-fulfilling prophecy because it was what he always heard from his mother. Moreover, he did not resist this prophecy because it validated his relationship as his fatherââ¬â¢s son which he might have not known while he was a child. At the same time, Ahmad seemed to be mostly affected by his motherââ¬â¢s behavior towards him. He even blamed his mother for starting him on smoking when he was in kindergarten. From this statement, it could be surmised that Ahmadââ¬â¢s mother was not very present in his early life, the mother was permissive, did not show any a ffection or care even when he did not go home for days and beat him when she knew he did something wrong. The attempts of the mother to discipline Ahmad only contributed to the childââ¬â¢s belief that he was not wanted or that he was a bad person. His poor self-concept was probably developed from what he heard from his mother who to him is the most significant person. These key cousnelling issues are important because it would hinder Ahmadââ¬â¢s chances of realizing his goals in therapy. His self-determinism and poor self-concept may stop him from thinking about his future since he is already a bad person there is nothing that could be done about it. His inadequate relationship with his mother has actually caused his poor self-concept which can be worked on during therapy.3. Discuss the therapeutic goals and how you would manage the case of Ahmad using your chosen therapeutic approach Solution focused brief therapy relies on three fundamental questions that needs to be asked by the therapist to the client which if done properly can lead to realizations that would help the client reach his goals. The therapist has to trust the client that he would answer the questions and the therapist has to ask the questions in such a way that the client would be able to adequately answer it.The basic questions include what are clientââ¬â¢s hopes for the outcome of the therapy, what would be the clientââ¬â¢s life be if these hopes are realized and what have the client been doing now and in the past that would help the client realize his goals. In Ahmadââ¬â¢s case the therapist first asks the question what are his goals in this therapy. Whatever Ahmadââ¬â¢s response be, it would be accepted as valid and real to him and can be established as the desired goals of the therapy. Ahmadââ¬â¢s goals should be placed foremost in the therapeutic relationship. The therapist can further ask Ahmad what he would feel if he realized this goal, would it make him feel better or not. In this way the client could further examine his goals if it is really what he wanted. The therapist also does not impose his/her own values or beliefs into the clientââ¬â¢s goals. After establishing the desired goals of the client, the therapist then can begin asking the second question centering on the preferred situation or kind of life that Ahmad wants to have when his goals are realized. In this stage of the therapy, the client is asked to elaborate on what his goals would bring him in the future. If his goal is to stop being apprehended then a likely approach would be to ask Ahmad what would his lie become if he does not have to face the police and the court as much, in this way Ahmad would realize a future without the threat of being caught by the police a likely possibility and which he can attain. By discussing the clientââ¬â¢s feelings, thoughts and reactions to the desired goal for the future, it becomes more present to Ahmad and become more attainable. In th is part of the therapy, the therapist can ask Ahmad the ââ¬Å"magic questionâ⬠. The magic question had been developed to help the client think more about his/her desired goals. The magic question is phrased as ââ¬Å"if you wake up in the morning and all of the things you would want to happen have happened already how you would feel? â⬠The goal is to be able to help the client realize that there is something after the problem, that there is no need to figure out the solution because occasionally the solution will present itself and the client just have to recognize it.In Ahmadââ¬â¢s case, the magic question would be ââ¬Å"if you wake up in the morning and a miracle had occurred to wipe all your problems, what would be the things you would notice that tells you that a miracle did occur? â⬠After this elaboration, the therapist then asks Ahmad to describe what he had been doing now or in past that he thinks would likely lead him to his goals. The idea here is to d raw out the skills and resources that the client already has in attaining his goals, it focuses more on the strengths of the client rather than his past or his problem behaviors. The client must be able to make the connection between what he already has done that have worked to help him reach his goal and the therapist can do this by asking the right questions and leading the client to discover for himself what those resources are. Solution focused brief therapy is called brief because sessions would only range from one to six times where significant realization and improvement can already occur. Ahmad is an intelligent person and he may be able to benefit from 2 or 3 sessions just to get his work through his issues with his relationship with his mother.4. Discuss the limitation challenges and ethical issues you might face in managing this case The limitations of solution focused brief therapy are dependent on the kind of problems and clients that come to the therapy. For example, if the client has substance abuse problems and would actually want to stop being caught by the police as her likely goal, this becomes an ethical dilemma for the counselor since solution focused brief therapy would accept all the goals of the client be it bad or good. However, a skilled therapist can always lead the client to positive future behaviors rather than dwell on the negative goals of the client. If the goal is to learn how to get away from the authorities, then the therapist has to ask the client what she thinks would lead her to this goal, and naturally the client would say to stop doing bad things. On the other hand, solution focused brief therapy generally work well with logical clients, if the client had a mental illness or a disability and is not capable of making decisions by themselves, then the approach would not work.Ahmad is clearly logical but a limitation would be that he is already convinced that he is bad and he does not see any problem with it. Solution focused brief therapy is only possible when the client has a clear idea of his problems, and Ahmad clearly does not think that being bad is an issue, he was maybe born to be bad. Solution focused brief therapy also does not allow therapists to change the values, ideas and emotions of the client and working with Ahmadââ¬â¢s concept of his being bad would definitely be a challenge. 5. Discuss the therapeutic technique that you would use this case and discuss the limitation of the techniqueSolution focused brief therapy had been borne out of the belief that instead of trying to understand the problem and finding solutions to it, it is more beneficial to focus on the future and the solution to the problem. More importantly, the client often has the resources to solve the problem which can be drawn out by the therapist using magic questions. This approach also says that the past is done with and the client or the therapist cannot do anything to undo it, so it is more worthwhile to focus on t he future and the solution to the problem. The approach is called brief since therapy is initiated only when the client needs to work on a problem and when the client already knows what to do with the problem, then the therapy is terminated, in this case one or two sessions would be sufficient. The limitations of the technique heavily depend on the inability of the client to work past the problem identification stage to the goal identification stage. If the client has difficulty in this area, the therapist can throw questions that lead the client to coping behaviors which also facilitate a clear identification of goals.Although solution focused brief therapy is simple in theory, it is actually very difficult to apply in real cases since it lacks structure and the therapist must have the presence of mind to stop from delving into the past since it is not relevant to the approach. Person Centered Therapy 1. After reading the story of Ahmad use one approach in counseling that you think might be helpful in managing this case. Explain briefly why you have chosen this approach. Ahmadââ¬â¢s case story is the best candidate for the application of the person centered therapy since Ahmad had issues with his self-concept and this is the forte of person centered therapy.Ahmadââ¬â¢s poor self-concept that is being a bad person because he was born that way was an acceptance of his motherââ¬â¢s conditional regard for him. He would rather be a bad person because his mother says so and which tells him he is like his father and therefore gain acceptance than to resist the idea of being a bad person and be ignored by his mother. From Ahmadââ¬â¢s narrative, it was obvious that his mother only paid attention to him when he was found to misbehave or when he did something really bad.Not going home for several days was not bad since his mother according to him trusted him; it was only when his mother knew of his stealing and vandalism that he was punished. To Ahmad, even a negative attention is more important than no attention at all from his mother. The person centered therapy specifically believes that psychological problems or disturbances stem from the inadequacy of unconditional positive regard that the client experiences in his childhood thereby stifling his growth and personal development. The person centered approach also believes that each one of us has the ability to grow and to achieve our potentials given the right amount and quality of positive regard. 2. Discuss some of key counseling issues that Ahmad is facing Ahmad has already formed his identity and self concept based on other peopleââ¬â¢s opinion of him, and that is a bad person. He even goes as far as saying that some people are borne to be good or bad and he is one of those who were already bad when they first came to the world. All the experiences he had in his life seemed to affirm this idea which has led to his own acceptance of that self-concept.Ahmadââ¬â¢s life had prob ably turned from bad to worse as he got older because he lacked the caring and nurturing relationships that would initiate change in his life. All his life, he had been doing bad things such as smoking in kindergarten, dropping out of school, stealing, leading a pack of boys to commit stress crimes, and yet he does not seem to be bitter about it. Ahmad had come to believe that it is his birthright to be bad, which to the person centered therapist, is a very alarming and poor self-concept.Another counseling issue that Ahmad needs to work with the therapist is how his relationship with his mother had contributed to his self-concept and that not because his mother sees him as a bad person does not mean that all the people in the world see him as such. 3. Discuss the therapeutic goals and how you would manage the case of Ahmad using your chosen therapeutic approach The person centered approach rests on the principle that when the client experiences the core conditions that are necessary for the therapeutic relationship, he/she will begin to experience change. The therapy first begins with the therapist establishing a relationship with Ahmad wherein the therapist must let Ahmad feel that he is accepted for who is and what he has done in the past, that Ahmad is a person of worth and that the therapist is there to listen and to understand his experiences. The person centered approach also believes that the client knows his/her problems better than any other person and the focus is not to find solutions or to explore the clientââ¬â¢s problems but to provide the necessary core conditions to inspire change in the client. Thus Ahmad would be asked to return for a regular session, wherein the therapist would make the client feel that he is happy to be with Ahmad, that he listens and empathize with Ahmad, when Ahmad says he does not like being in therapy, the therapist would not be quick to refute any of it but rather accepts that feeling as valid and help Ahmad explore m ore that feeling without the need for meeting any desired behavior or rules of the therapist. If Ahmad refuses to talk during therapy, then the therapist must not force him to talk but rather make him feel that even if he does not talk, the therapist still values his effort in coming to the session. The third core condition is congruence which means that the therapist is genuine and honest about his feelings and ideas, this demonstrates to Ahmad that the therapist is transparent and that he does not have to be someone else than himself during their counseling sessions. During each session, the therapist must strive to make Ahmad feel that he is accepted, loved, listened to and welcomed. In this way, Ahmad would soon trust and realize that the therapist is a real person who is willing to give him attention and care without being anything else other than himself, during sessions the therapist can ask Ahmad questions about his life, his experiences, his goals for the future and his feeli ngs and thoughts which would later on make Ahmad share his dreams and aspirations and maybe on his own begin to act on his plans or change his behaviors because each person is capable of change, of doing good and of becoming better persons.Hopefully, the quality of the therapistââ¬â¢s relationship with Ahmad makes him realize that he is not a bad person, that he just believed he was because it was what he always heard. 4. Discuss the limitation challenges and ethical issues you might face in managing this case The limitations in using the person centered approach in Ahmadââ¬â¢s case is that he may not have the luxury of time to always come for sessions, he may be in a facility for youth offenders or he may even be imprisoned due to his crimes which would make it impossible for him to work with a therapist.Although group homes have in-house counselors and Ahmad might be able to work with them. Another challenge is the fact that an accepting and emphatic counselor might instead validate or reinforce Ahmadââ¬â¢s belief that there is nothing wrong with his behavior because he is destined to be bad. In fact, Ahmad may seem to have rationalized his self-concept into saying that bad people naturally do bad things, so if he is a bad person, then it is natural for him to do bad things. Moreover, there is no way to verify Ahmadââ¬â¢s stories because in this approach the therapist believes and relies on the clientââ¬â¢s accounts as being true. 5. Discuss the therapeutic technique that you would use this case and discuss the limitation of the technique The person centered approach believes in the fundamental goodness of all human being, thus no matter how bad a person is, there will always be room for goodness to grow in his person. As such, the therapeutic relationship is established to provide the client with the core conditions necessary fro growth.Psychological disturbances occur because people do not always receive unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness; moreover, the individual comes to accept the positive regard of other people despite its being conditional because it is better to have any kind of attention than no attention at all. This approach also believes that by providing the right nurturing environment the client would become more aware of his thoughts and feelings would be able to understand more of himself and his behaviors. This approach however is not for everyone, very young children who lack self-awareness, and those who do not want to explore their thoughts and feelings or expose their inner self to other people would not find this approach very useful. The goal of person centered therapy is found its fundamental belief and faith in the person, thus the therapy is also focused on the personââ¬â¢s experiences, beliefs, wishes, feelings and issues which have either prevented him/her from growing into the person that he/she should be.There are a number of criticisms leveled against person centered ap proach because it lacks direction and it structure. It depends heavily on the problems that the client brings to the therapy. Another criticism is that if person centered therapy claims that a healthy relationship is more important than the expertise of the therapist then what then the difference of this approach from other approaches is.However, research although controversial at this point had found that the effectiveness of the therapeutic relationship is strongly associated with the quality of the relationship of the client and the therapist. In 1612, the settlers of the first American colony in Jamestown, Virginia grew tobacco as a cash crop. Tobacco helped pay for the American Revolution against England. By the 1800ââ¬â¢s, many people had begun using tobacco in different ways. Some chewed it, others smoked it in a fancy pipe, and some even hand rolled a cigarette or cigar. Most people only smoked about 40 cigarettes a year. It wasnââ¬â¢t until 1865 that the first commercial cigarettes were made by Washington Duke on his 300 acre farm in Raleigh, North Carolina. He made hand rolled cigarettes and sold them to the soldiers at the end of the Civil war. In 1881 cigarette smoking became wide spread due to James Bonsackââ¬â¢s invention of the cigarette making machine. Bonsackââ¬â¢s machine could make 120,000 cigarettes a day. Because of this machine, he created a business with Washington dukes son, James Duke. T hey built a factory and made about 10 million cigarettes the first year and around one billion cigarettes only five years later. They packed the cigarettes in a box with baseball cards and called them Duke of Durham. They were known as the first brand of cigarettes. The legislation, enacted in 2008, is failing to a chieve its goals in part because Congress has supplied only 5.3% of the authorized amount from Fiscal Year 2009 through Fiscal Year 2011. That money was supposed to be available to states to help cover the cost of gathering and supplying records. The revised law would guarantee full funding to states and federal agencies to comply with reporting requirements to the NICS database. Penalties: Establish tougher penalties for states that do not comply with the law by cutting more of their Justice Department funding. The NICS Improvement Amendments Act establishes only minor penalties for non-compliance. It sets out a timeline, and in each year starting in Fiscal Year 2011 states are required to turn over a target percentage of the records they have naming people who should not be allowed to buy guns under federal law. If they do not comply, they could face cuts to a portion of their federal justice assistance funding.
